I have tried again and have negative result. I cannot use the external IDE cable to connect extra harddisk.

On the other hand, I used a 2.5 -> 3.5 IDE adopter to convert the internal CD driver IDE interface and connect a extra harddisk, it works.

Anyone try connect 2 harddisks for the imac (233 - 333) using the method which stoby's suggested?

Why there is a converter between the LCD monitor and the imac. Is the imac cannot direct connect to VGA monitor?
